How small is small? Let’s start by talking about how we measure the smallest of small parts. The International Bureau of Weights and Measures uses the very small ‘micrometre’ measurement (spelled ‘micrometer’ in the United States), which is commonly referred to as a ‘micron’. A micron is equivalent to one-thousandth of a millimeter, 0.001mm, or approximately 0.000039 inch. For comparison, the width of a strand of spider web silk ranges from 3-8 microns, the thickness of plastic cling wrap is 10-12 microns, a grain of table salt is approximately 100 microns, the thickness of a human hair can be anywhere from 17-181 microns.
